Moment Factory

“Moment Factory is a new media and entertainment studio specialized in the conception and production of multimedia environments combining video, lighting, architecture, sound and special effects to create remarkable experiences.” (Moment Factory 2014)

Moment Factory have a focus on creating immersive and interactive light and sound installations for concerts, commercial installations and exhibitions. Moment Factory is run by three key individuals and founders, Éric Fournier, Sakchin Bessette, and Dominic Audet. The organisation is based in Canada and employs around 120 artists, programmers and animators. The work they create is displayed all over the world in a wide variety of locations. They also featured on Apple’s front page feature on 30 years of the Mac as the artists of 2013.

Ode a la vie on the Sagrada Familia, 2012.

The above video is a combination of sound and animation projection mapped onto the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. The work was inspired by Gaudi’s vision of covering the building in colour. It employs a variety of projection mapping and animation techniques to create the illusion of the building coming alive with colour. Using 3D graphics techniques it has been possible to create the illusion of the building distorting and warping. It’s a visually stunning piece on a large-scale which would be prohibitively expensive for someone like myself. From previous research I discovered hiring projectors (approx. 20,000 lumens) for a small building comes at a substantial cost.

Nine Inch Nails, Lights in the sky tour, 2008

Another example of work by Moment Factory was the creation of visuals for the Nine Inch Nails, Lights in the sky tour. This utilised “3D-camera technology to produce an interactive light show to “allow Trent and his band to appear and disappear as silhouettes hidden in a field of pixels.” The pre-made and instantaneous visuals will dance across the moving screens as the band plays, creating a sea of pixels.” (Intrator 2013). Again the combination of visuals, sound and interactivity create a unique and innovative piece of work that creates an immersive experience for the audience.

Whilst Moment Factory focus on more commercial aspects of the techniques I aim to explore,the intention is to create a piece of work that employs a similar combination of visuals, sound and interactivity and apply it to a topic that interests me as an artist. Although I aim to explore these techniques and apply them to my personal work, future developments may allow me to produce work on a similar scale through commissions or collaborations if this piece of work is successful.
